My Experience
Owner, Primary Consultant
The January Strategy
2011 to Present
I do independent consulting to help diverse clients with communications, project management and problem solving. Projects include:
-
2024: Sponsorship Steward, ETHDenver. (Denver, Colorado) ETHDenver is an innovation festival and hackathon focused on the convergence of blockchain technology, decentralization, education, community and culture. As a sponsor steward, I was responsible for over 40 company sponsors for three months leading up to the onsite event in Denver. I developed an understanding of each sponsors needs and goals and maintained daily communication. I utilized various project management tools such as Asana, Google Docs, CRM, Slack and Telegram and vendor portals to shepherd sponsors though a complex environment that included expo booth design, marketing assets, and the hackathon in a timely manner, all the while facilitating communication and deliverables with multiple, decentralized ETHDenver teams. We then worked on-site to welcome over 15,000 people over 9 days of events.
-
2022/2023: Project Manager, Colorado Citizen's Observers Pilot Project. (Larimer County, Colorado). I was hired by volunteers from the League of Women Voters Larimer County to build a comprehensive program to train and employ people to attend local government meetings and create non-partisan reports with supporting documentation to share with the public and media. As a journalist and strategic planner, I was the only paid staff, (part-time) and served all aspects of the pilot from design to technology to publishing. I created a project plan, developed new roles, facilitated partners, created outreach strategies and instruments, developed a video processing and AI workflow, built the website and Google Drive backend, created a training program, hired and trained staff, developed reporting processes, and was responsible for creating processes and documentation required for scaling the program statewide.

"Trump's Teens" by January Jones, June 2016
News Director
2004 to 2011
WFHB is a community radio station charged with a mission to increase the cultural diversity of Bloomington, Indiana. I served as News Director during 2011, after beginning as Assistant News Director in 2009. In those capacities I was responsible for nearly 100 volunteers and 17 local productions, including our award-winning Daily Local News. I wrote news stories, conducted interviews, hosted shows and edited audio/images to cover community events. I also was responsible for creating an ‘open door’ environment, updating website content, conducting news department public outreach, training volunteers and developing working relationships with community partners. A primary responsibility was to produce a weekly, televised show with Community Access Television Services about local government called CATS Week. I was the primary writer and host for over 30 episodes that included in-depth interviews with local leaders and a multi-part field series about planning and development in downtown Bloomington. During my time there I won several reporting awards from the Indiana Society of Professional Journalists. Before joining the staff, I began as a volunteer music programmer in 2004 and continued to host a music mix until 2011.
CATS Week
This is a weekly television program about local government in Monroe County produced between WFHB and the local cable access television station- CATS. Since the early 1980's CATS has been televising and archiving local government meetings. This video content, combined with anchor segments and studio interviews was turned into detailed coverage of more than 20 governing bodies. The stories first appeared on the CATS Week TV show and then were flipped for use on the radio by WFHB's Daily Local News. In addition to government meeting coverage on CATS Week, I also interviewed local community leaders to give context about complicated municipal structures like the Board of Public Works or the Monroe County Plan Commission. Additionally, I was able to produce a 3-part field segment about development called "Changing Bloomington."
Community Outreach and Development Coordinator
Life Designs (formerly Options for Better Living)
2009 to 2011
Life Designs is a parent founded, non-profit that supports people with disabilities. While serving as the Community Outreach and Development Coordinator, we implemented the Benevon model of fundraising with our donor base. My duties included designing marketing and multi-media communication materials. I also maintained the donor database, organized community events, managed board members and staff, identified funding opportunities and provided general support for various organizational needs. My employment was cut short by state funding reductions.
Project Coordinator
Monroe County Access to Recreation
2007 to 2009
MCAR was a partnership promoting accessible recreation comprised of the W.K. Kellogg Foundation, the Community Foundation of Bloomington and Monroe County, Monroe County Parks and Recreation and Life Designs. The partnership built an accessible recreation area at Karst Farm Park and an endowment fund. As the independent Project Coordinator, I facilitated the grant and the relationships between the partners, designed and managed communications, convened project steering committee meetings, fundraised and conducted community outreach. I began as a volunteer on the committee and helped write the successful funding application.

SDG was a consulting firm concentrating on strategic planning, research and project management for community and economic development projects. As a Project Associate, I provided support and management for diverse projects throughout the state that included community needs assessments and municipal comprehensive plans. I conducted web-based research, created analytical reports, designed surveys, supported website updates and design. I also did data management, client correspondence, marketing and outreach, conference/meeting logistics, graphic design and document/report writing, editing and preparation. During this time I launched two websites- "Meet the Heartlands" (a virtual family representing typical demographics of southern Indiana) and "The Farmers Network" (an early social networking website for alternative agriculture). I worked with a range of government, non-profit and private sector clients. I continued to work with SDG on projects as a subcontractor until 2013.
Research Director
Improving Kids' Environment (IKE)
2002 to 2004
IKE is a non-profit children's environmental health coalition. As Research Director, I was in charge of implementing projects, working with communities, conducting outreach and reporting on project outcomes. I assisted the executive director with organizing conferences and trainings, managing board and coalition meetings, creating educational materials and applying for funding. A primary responsibility was managing the Citizen's Healthy Homes Initiative. We partnered with a local community center to help people identify home health hazards like lead-based paint.
